Today was the first race for me and boy I really could feel it. On a whim last week I decided to sign up for this one, even though I knew I'd definitely be walking the whole thing. I showed up this morning, got my number, which is 54, and pinned it on. I had quite a bit of time beforehand and so I thought I'd walk around, get the blood flowing. I saw a lady with a Mackinac Island shirt and commented on it as she was going into the building where sign ups were. I think I threw her off, but I thought it was interesting because well, I had a a Mackinaw City hat on, or maybe it's the island on there, I can't remember, but either way, thought it was interesting. About 15 minutes later as I was starting to stretch, she comes back up to me and asked if I were the one who said something about her shirt. Of course it was me and we started to talk. She was from Muncie, has a friend who lives on the island, she used to train on the island, so we were starting to get along fairly well. She had me all pumped up for this race, so much so that at the start at 9:10, I started to jog, which for me isn't a good idea to do. I didn't jog long, but got through the out and back part in the grass and entered the woods.
The first mile wasn't so bad, just like normal walking trails. Just before mile 2, things started to pick up, the hills started to get rougher and more rugged, the stairs hit us and I was starting to get tired. At this point, mile 2, I kept saying to myself, "What the heck was I thinking?! Seriously, a trail run for my first 5k?!" I could barely walk it and was starting to get passed by the 15k-ers. They were amazing! I couldn't believe how well they were doing and they had to do 3x's the distance I was doing! The first two flew by me so quickly! The second mile was hard, I won't say that, some of the hills were crazy to climb, but I got through them, then mile three and just after that the worst part of the race...the boardwalk! If anyone has ever been out there at Mounds State Park and has seen the larger staircase that's closer to the clubhouse, you'll know what I'm talking about. 80 2ft. tall stairs! Steep stairs! I got up two of the flights and I wasn't sure I could make it.
I got about at the third flight, huffing and puffing and guess what!?! My new friend from Muncie was at the top off to the side of the stairs rooting me on! She made a world of difference for me! I still get emotional over it because she was there and there were others along the way who pushed me and encouraged me and made me feel so good about what I was doing. At the top of the horrible staircase, was the last little bit of the trail. I was so dog tired by the time I got there, that the last little bit seemed horrible and so long! I got up to the finish line area, they announced my name and where I was from and wha-la! It was done. I finished with a walking time of 1hr 15min 38sec, which was so much faster than what I thought it would be. I was thinking it'd take me at least another 15 more minutes! I know now that after this 5k, there is no way I can't finish the rest of the ones I'm doing! I had so much support today and I'm so grateful for the guts to get out there and do it! So what if I was last in the 5k, so what if my time was longer than some of the 15k-ers, you know what, I finished and that's ALL that matters! Time to get ready for May 12!
